“There is no remembrance of men of old, and even those who are yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow.” Ecclesiastes 1:11
There is good news and bad news in this verse. The good news is for those people who worry about what others think about them. In the end no one will think about you at all. The bad news is for those who seek some kind of temporal immortality. In the end no one will think about you at all.
Isaac Watts said it well: “Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its sons away; they fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.” Those lines from “God, Our Help in Ages Past” remind us that only God can give our lives significance. Without Him we are here today, gone tomorrow, and eventually forgotten.
With each passing day we forget a little more. If you want to be remembered, follow the One who lives forever. Follow the One who records your name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. You will not have to be remembered, for you will forever be.
