“For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” Deut. 20:4
When facing warfare, the children of Israel were reminded that they would not face that difficulty alone, and that it was God who would give them the victory.
Likewise, men and women of faith in the history of America have been called to stand firm through difficult times. Abraham Lincoln was one who took it on the chin on many occasions because of his strong sense of conviction regarding right and wrong and the future of our nation. He was more interested in his strength of character than his political image, and believed God would honor his steadfast loyalty to truth. In faith he gave over the future of our nation to a faithful God. His part was to be honest, true, and trustworthy before Him.
He said, “I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to the light I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.”
He let God’s word be his ultimate guide and would not be swayed away from what he knew was right and more importantly, righteous. He lived the example of a good leader — one who knows the way, shows the way, and goes the way. He understood that the devil is right at home in rational dialogues that try to get people to do what God says is wrong, but he would not be swayed. The outcome of his life is obvious in the blessings we share in our nation today.
Likewise, we must live up to the light we have. We must be honest, true, and trustworthy before Him knowing He will bring about our victories, and we shall not be put to shame.
